"MUSETTE NATURE" Quest Cards - An interpretive tool for a natural site

fiches exploration

For the project "Musette Nature" Ysalide created Quest cards that not only provide information about the site but also connect the visitor with the natural environment through engaging hands-on activities. A sustainable experience is formed that encourages visitors to explore the site with all of their senses while allowing them to re-connect to nature from their home through an accompanying website.
The experience on-site is enhanced through the "musette nature" backpack: tools such as a binocular, a magnifying glass, a cast-kit for animal prints, a field guide and of course the Quest cards which guide the visitor along the path

Once on the path, the visitor/explorer is invited to stop at each step indicated on the cards. Brief yet adequate information put him into the picture and point out elements of the environment that require attention: watch out, things are not always as they seem ! This pond looks quiet but... On the backside of each card, 3 different activities of varying type are proposed. For example the visitor can be asked to place the humid zones on a map to find out about the origins of the pond in front of him. Another activity would require him to connect species that live in the pond with arrows: who eats who? Finally the last activity invites him to find a very specific plant and to take a picture of it.

At the end of the path the experience is extended to the online extension of the project, a participative website. Visitors are invited to share their experience by publishing the material they have collected, such as photos and drawings, and to compare their answers with the solutions for the different riddles and questions. The participative website allows on the one hand to keep a vivid link with the visitors, while the material produced by the visitors enhances the body of available information online which in turn motivates web visitors to become real visitors.
By encouraging visitors to be active, preliminary results of our evaluation show that the bond with the natural site becomes stronger, the quality of the visit is increased and the awareness of the visitors becomes higher in comparison with conventional tools such as maps.

An initial project has been conducted in cooperation with the Natural Park of Volcanoes Auvergne, France http://www.parc-volcans-auvergne.com/index.php4.
